Advanced poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) decorated chlorinated polyvinyl chloride membrane with low area resistance for vanadium flow battery

A novel chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) membrane with low area resistance and excellent cycling performance was prepared for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), in which amine groups could be protonated the acidic conditions, introduced into CPVC to conduct ions. The positively charged can not only form successive smooth pathways ion transport, but also prevent cross contamination of electrolytes based on Donnan exclusion. Besides, groups, continually intensively distribute surface along domains near surface, are considerably beneficial rapid free transport protons, thereby lowering resistance. Consequently, VFB resultant CPVC/PVP demonstrated a voltage efficiency around 80% at 200 mA cm−2 (higher than that commercial Nafion 115), enabled higher power density VFBs. Furthermore, this battery continuously ran over 300 cycles 80 cm−2, indicating great chemical stability membrane. application such high-performance extends choice materials high significance further development
